Workshop A
Overcoming challenges around talent management

Pre-Conference Workshop A
Monday 14th May, 2012
9:00am – 4:00pm

Public sector organisations are increasingly turning their attention to talent management in order to ensure their organisations have the capabilities, and leaders, required to meet future challenges. But talent management isn’t easy – particularly in the public sector context.

This highly practical workshop will explore how organisations can manage some of the most common challenges associated with establishing and rolling out talent management and associated initiatives. There will also be time for delegates to explore how they might tackle their specific challenges with the facilitator and the group.

Challenges to be explored include:

  • Gaining support/buy-in from the Executive for talent initiatives
  • Establishing governance arrangements that will support leader-led initiatives
  • Overcoming the misconception that talent programs circumvent merit selection
  • Effectively managing people and their expectations through programs – showing that participation doesn’t always equal promotion
  • How to embed diversity/flexibility into talent programs
  • Harnessing the ‘talent’ of those concluding their careers to develop future leaders

Workshop B
Building your employer brand to attract & retain talent

Mid-Conference Evening Workshop B
Tuesday 15th May, 2012
5:30pm – 8:30pm

Expert Facilitator:

When this workshop’s facilitator agreed to join the public service, her private sector colleagues greeted her announcement with a blend of horror and mirth – with many references to grey cardigans, lack of original thought and death by a thousand paper cuts! But when she talked with her public sector colleagues she heard messages of fantastic opportunities and exciting work with a sense of satisfaction in serving the community.

Building an employer brand and embedding it in the organisation is the key to attracting and retaining the talent required to best deliver your mission. This workshop will explore how this can be done and will cover:

  • How to build your employer brand and embed it into an integrated people system to address the human capital and enterprise outcome needs of your specific branch
  • How to work on your own organisation’s people system and explore ways to bring your brand to life through integration into every element
